IEC 60335 -1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety Part 1: General requirements 1976 Second Edition published (44 Parts 2 published by 1989) – Cl 19 Requirements for testing electronic circuits introduced. No recognition of reliance on the correct operation of microprocessors (programmable devices) – Cl 29 clearances, creepage distances based on working voltage and protection against deposition of dirt – Cl 30. 2 resistance to fire used the “hot mandrel” test from CEE 11 1984 Amendment Number 4 Introduced glow-wire test in place of hot mandrel test, differentiated between attended and unattended appliances for the GW test severity and “bad connection test with heaters” also made applicable for unattended appliances. Consequential needle flame test applied if there was a failure of the GWT or the BCT. 1988 Amendment Number 6 Requirement introduced. to consider sleeper faults in electronic circuits used for protection (now 19. 11. 3) TC 61

IEC 60335 -1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety Part 1: General requirements

IEC 60335 -1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety Part 1: General requirements 1991 Third Edition published (86 Parts 2 published by 2000) • • • Cl 19 No change to the clause 19 requirements concerning electronic circuits Cl 29 clearances, creepage distances based on working voltage and protection against deposition of dirt Cl 30. 2 Reduction change to GW test severity for unattended appliances. Consequential test now also applied to unattended appliances where the GW test was passed with ignition. Amendment 1 (1994) No relevant changes to Cl 19, 29 or 30. 2 Amendment 2 (1999) No relevant changes to Cl 19, 29 or 30. 2 TC 61

IEC 60335 -1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety Part 1: General requirements

IEC 60335 -1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety Part 1: General requirements 2001 Fourth Edition published (97 Parts 2 published by 2008) • Cl 19 No change to the clause 19 requirements concerning electronic circuits • Cl 29 clearances, creepage distances now based on IEC 60664 -1 taking into account rated impulse voltage (obtained from rated voltage and over-voltage category) for clearances and material group, pollution degree and working voltage for creepage distances • Cl 30. 2 Increase in GW test severity for attended and unattended appliances. No failure of GW test allowed. Consequential test now only applied to unattended appliances where the GW test was passed with ignition. Needle flame test applied to PCB material. Some pre-selection alternatives introduced. TC 61

IEC 60335 -1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety Part 1: General requirements

IEC 60335 -1 Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety Part 1: General requirements Amendment 1 (2004) • • • Cl 19 EMP tests introduced for appliances that have an electronic off or that have a standby mode or that use PECs for safety. Recognition of microprocessors (programmable devices) used in PECs. Software assessment requirements introduced. Cl 29 Smaller clearances as first choice recognized so as be more in line with component standards. Reduction in thickness for SI and RI allowed if a penetration test can be withstood. Cl 30. 2 No major change to the requirements TC 61

Compliance criteria for door interlock failures is specified. The test criteria for some of the EMP tests have been clarified. The running overload test has been made more generally applicable for appliances that use PECs to sense parameters other than winding temperatures. Cl 29 Requirements for functional insulation have been extended to cover insulation that is subjected to a steady-state voltage or recurring peak voltage including voltages with frequency exceeding 30 k. Hz. Requirements for insulation (basic, supplementary, reinforced) subject to working voltage > rated voltage have been included based on IEC 60664 -1 and IEC 60664 -4.
