IDENTITY FORMATION THEORY Psychological Stages

One’s sense of identity is determined largely by the choices and commitments made regarding

One’s sense of identity is determined largely by the choices and commitments made regarding certain personal & social traits. Identity involves the adoption of the following: • a set of values/morals • a vocational direction • a sense of sexual/gender identity

A well-developed identity provides a sense of one’s strengths, weaknesses, and individual uniqueness. An

A well-developed identity provides a sense of one’s strengths, weaknesses, and individual uniqueness. An under-developed identity is not able to define his or her personal strengths or weaknesses, and does not have a well-articulated sense of self.

Identity Diffusion – the status in which the individual does not believe they have

Identity Diffusion – the status in which the individual does not believe they have choices; he or she has not yet made (nor is attempting/willing to make) a commitment to a specific set of values, etc.

Identity Foreclosure – The status in which the individual seems willing to commit to

Identity Foreclosure – The status in which the individual seems willing to commit to some relevant roles, values, or goals for the future. Adolescents in this stage have not experienced an identity crisis. They tend to conform to the expectations of others regarding their future (e. g. allowing a parent to determine a career direction).

Identity Moratorium – The status in which the individual is currently in a crisis,

Identity Moratorium – The status in which the individual is currently in a crisis, exploring various commitments and is ready to make choices about their life and future. But still feels pressure from outside influences, has not made a commitment to these choices yet.

Identity Achievement – The status in which the individual has gone through an identity

Identity Achievement – The status in which the individual has gone through an identity crisis (an event that has shifted their world view); They have made a commitment to a sense of identity (i. e. certain role or value) that he or she has chosen for themselves.
