OBJECTIVES: • To be able to define the terms identity, stereotype, dynamic character, and static character • To analyze and create a character analysis of the main characters in the OUTSIDERS. • To determine how stereotypes affect individuals and society
Your Personal Identity • Identity- your sense of yourself as a unique individual. • YOUR personal identity depends a lot on your age and circumstances, other parts of your identity are unique to YOU!!
How Identity Forms • Role Models • Interests • Personality • YOUR identity will change throughout your life as your interests change. Eventually you will develop a clear sense of your own values, interests, beliefs, occupational goals, and relationship expectations.
Aspects of Identity • Personality- A complex set of characteristics that makes YOU unique. • Your personality sets you apart from other people and determines how you will react in certain situations. • Some of us have loud personalities, others are quiet, and sometimes we are in the middle of both.
Working Toward a Positive Identity • Recognize you strengths and weaknesses • Demonstrate Positive Values • Develop a Purpose in your life • Form meaningful relationships • Avoid unhealthful high-risk behaviors • Contribute to the community
STEREOTYPES & CHARACTER TYPES • A stereotyped character is a person in a piece of writing who is strongly characterized by membership to a recognizable group, such as race or gender. . • Writers sometimes introduce stereotyped characters only to break their stereotypes later in a work to cause dramatic irony and plot twists • Dynamic character – a character who changes, especially one who comes to a major realization • Static Character – character that undergoes no change; sometimes referred to as “FLAT”
