Identifying Parts of an Expression 6. EE. 2 b
What will you be able to do? I can name the parts of an expression including terms, coefficients, variables, constants, and exponents.
5 x + y + 8 – x 2 Expression: A mix of variables, constants, exponents, and operations. Variable: A letter that represents an unknown number. Constant: A number.
5 x + y + 8 – x 2 Exponent: This shows a number raised to a power. Operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Term: A small part of the expression which could be a constant, variable, number with an exponent, or a number multiplied by a variable. 5 x + y + 8 – x 2 Each term is separated by a + or – sign.
Like terms have the same variable and exponent. 5 x and 10 x n 2 and 7 n 2
Coefficient: A number multiplied by a variable. 5 x + y + 8 5 is the coefficient in front of x 1 is the coefficient in front of y 2(8+7) There is no coefficient. This is a product of two factors.
