Evaluating Websites �How do we know if a website is good and can be used for class assignments? �Some websites provide “bad” information that is untrue or inaccurate �Who checks the information for accuracy? �The next five slides contain five things you need to consider before using a website
Authority �Who is author? / sponsor? �Who wrote the information in the site? �Qualifications �Why is the author qualified to write about the subject matter �Anyone can create a website and publish it �Can we verify contact information? �Address �Phone number �E-mail address
Accuracy �What sources were used and are they listed? �Who is responsible for the accuracy of the information? �Is it a company website such as Apple? �Errors (usually a bad sign) �Grammatical �Spelling �Can information be verified? �How?
Objectivity �Purpose of the site �Is it informational? �Trying to sell you something? �Trying to get you to believe something? �Bias �Is the information misleading because of the author’s bias or opinion �Example: a political website may only tell one side of a story trying to get you to believe their candidate
Currency �When was information updated? �Important for certain topics like technology �Maybe not as important for something related to history �Is information current? �Even though a website is updated it does not mean all of the information is current �Look for dates for when the information was written not just when the site was updated �When was it published?
Coverage �How much information is covered? �Depth �Summary � Brief description of the topic �Outline � Gives all the basic information covered but not in depth �In-depth � Detailed information �Users need to decide if the information from a site is detailed enough for use
Identifying Good Sites �What are some ways? �Go through the five things discussed: Authority, Accuracy, Objectivity, Currency, Coverage �What sites are most likely to me credible? �Government websites � Many of these sites have good credible information and up-to -date statistics �Well known companies � Apple is a credible website if you are researching technology �Popular organizations � American Medical Association
