Effective: • Communication – You have to be able to communicate with departments other than technology to ensure that you are maximizing your technology resources. The director of technology would need to have daily conversations with the director of instruction. You wouldn’t want to buy $50 k worth of devices unless they would be usable in the classroom. There has to be clear and open conversations about what technology best serves the students. • Organization – We manage over 2, 000 IP devices in the IT department. Our daily roles are dynamic. One day we may be building a server. The next, we are fixing printers and projectors. I might be on the phone with our E-Rate consultants working on a project worth over $100 k. You have to stay focused, organized, and be willing to change roles in a second to do this job effectively.
Ineffective: • Apathetic – You wouldn’t want to have a tech leader who only cared about IT stuff and not about the students. In this situation everyone would lose. You need someone who has interests in both IT related tasks as well as classroom learning.
