SUMMARY In the course I learned a lot of new information about disabilities as well as my eyes were opened to teaching special education. With the help of Service Learning, I was able to witness first hand what it would be like to have a class of my own and teach special education children. With being able to observe this classroom I was able to think long and hard about what I would do if I had to teach a special education classroom. I always knew that teaching exceptional children, a lot more work would be asked of me. Though I did not know exactly what it was that I would have to do. For example, IEP’s are something that I knew nothing about. “The individualized education program (IEP) is the legal document that describes the educational services a student receives” (Hallahan, 1994, p. 26). I was able to sit in a meeting with my Service Learning teacher, the principal, the student and the student’s mother. Sitting in this meeting made my understanding greater and I fully understood why it is important to write up an IEP for each exceptional learner. I did not know this was required of special education teachers, but with reading the text and completing the Service Learning assignment I was made aware of this.
