BRAINSTORMING Involves finding creative ways of gathering data and problem solving, arriving at various unique solutions by gathering spontaneous answers from participants. Best used when no clear opportunity has been identified
FOCUS GROUP A controlled group interview of a target audience often led by a facilitator. A set series of questions are covered and the results are used as a guide. May be helpful in generating new ideas or as a screening tool.
CHECKLIST METHOD This is defined as using a series of related questions and/or statements to aid in the development of a new idea or ideas. It may be helpful when there are existing criteria to guide the process.
PROBLEM INVENTORY ANALYSIS Somewhat similar to a focus group. New ideas and solutions are obtained by presenting customers with the problem affecting a given product or item. Ideal in an existing business with the benefit of feedback from its customers
SCENARIO THINKING This process tries to anticipate the various possible outcomes to a particular situation This may be applied at almost any stage
NOTEBOOK METHOD A notebook is used to record the possible solutions to an existing problem or scenario. This is done constantly over a period of time, at the end of which, the best ideas are developed and further enhanced. Careful tracking can lead to identification of opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked.
REVERSE BRAINSTORMING This is a way of arriving at new ideas while looking at the negative aspects of the problems involved. Analyzing the problem has often led to new entrepreneurial opportunities.
DELPHI METHODOLOGY This approach uses the knowledge of experts on the subject matter to arrive at the outcome. The panel of experts participates anonymously so that no one has an influence on the outcome. This is commonly used by established organizations to answer major strategic questions.
GORDON METHOD New ideas are developed without the participants having knowledge of the problem. It is similar in application to the Delphi Method.
FREE ASSOCIATION By writing down words or phrases associated with the problem, a thought process, a chain of word association is created which ultimately culminates in the development of new ideas. As with brainstorming, this can generate new ideas but may also be used at any stage.
