ID 308 Construction + Materials IV: Construction Documents Systems Coordination Prof. Brody Endicott College
All that other stuff • Fire protection – Sprinklers – Exit lighting and signage – Smoke detection systems • HVAC diffusers and registers • Miscellaneous electrical – A/V, including speakers, network repeaters, (telephones), etc – Retractable screens, projectors, etc
Dimensions of recessed lighting
Structural Systems
Steel yourselves
Concrete systems
Most restrictive
Heating and A/C symbols
Mechanical Plans from the Engineer
You need the duct sizing and register locations
Air systems: how they work
Parts of a furnace: this is what goes in your mechanic al room
Supply air diffusers
Linear diffusers and return grilles
Fire codes • See NFPA 72 • Three parts: – Initiation – Notification – Control
Manual Pull Stations • By each required exit
Smoke detectors • One in every enclosed space • One every 41’ along corridors (for ceilings below 24’) • Optical sensitivity • Hard-wired
Fire Detectors • One near each required exit in exit access corridors • Required in some specific occupancies (hazardous)
Exit signage • Wall or ceiling mtd; can be lit internally • At every exit door • Every 100’
Strobe lights and horns • Spread out so that they’re visible within major egress components • Also in bathrooms
Battery-powered lights • Integrated with built-in lighting • Mounted on walls with battery packs (for retrofit, or where built-in lighting is not suitable)
Sprinklers • Use this process when working with an engineer of any sort – Start with rule of thumb for initiation layout – Read engineer’s drawings for final design, and copy onto your RCP – Coordinate: look for interferences with lighting, ducts, soffits and structure – note any changes and send back to engineer – 7. 5’ from wall, 15’ OC both directions
Fire Extinguishers • One near each required exit in exit access corridors • Required in some specific occupancies (hazardous)
Hose cabinets • By required exits
Other operable devices • Hold-opens • Fire department notification • Stairwell pressurization • Smoke management systems
Wireless • Wireless repeaters – Every 150’ within direct line of sight – 50’ through interior partitions – Not at all through masonry/exterior walls
Rules of Thumb • For schematic layouts • Use and engineer or other consultant for final layout
A/V equipment • TV’s, projectors, etc • Sight lines are critical (for viewer and projector) • Speakers: – Coverage varies greatly by system – One in a room – Wall or ceiling mtd – Stereos, CD’s, etc: within the room
Don’t Forget Signage!!! • Exit signs at all the doors (show in elevation, if you’re doing them) • Strobe emergency lights in the bathrooms • Emergency lights along all the paths of egress • All need to be located in the drawings and specified
Fire Extinguishers • Per NFPA 11 • Every 150’ in assembly Use Groups (place public areas) • Hazardous locations (kitchens)
What to do this week on your projects • Calculations are due this week! • As for the rest of the term… – Add all dimensions to RCPs – Add all notes – Start drawing up details – Finish up Lighting Schedule – Keep saving and labeling your fixture cuts as you decide on them
