Highlights • Summary: High (good) activity level in the project right now - staffing up to meet demand • Organization – – • In-Kind – – – – • Two employees and three consultants recruited in the period Eight permanent positions remain open and several consultant positions are open for recruitment Project activity execution processes improved by using electronic tracking and follow-up tools like JIRA Risk management workshops with all work packages held. Many new risks collected and common risk “themes” identified Progress on in-kind schedule for MEBT controls and integration with ESS Bilbao, Spain Progress on in-kind schedule for instrument detector EPICS integration with STFC, UK Progress on in-kind project for Ether. CAT slave hardware development with Tallinn Technical University, Estonia Kick-off meetings held for in-kind projects for Alarm management and Logbook definition projects with IFE, Norway Kick-off meetings held for in-kind projects for Control room and Network equipment projects with IFE, Norway Extensive ICS support on-site in Catania for the Ion source/LEBT development with in-kind partners In-kind project with PSI, Switzerland for ICS digital controller progressing according to plan. IFC 1410 prototypes now available ICS In-kind manager Wojtek Fabianowski started Procurement – – Finalized introduction meetings with suppliers within the new Software services framework agreement Commercial framework for Integration services now published - very important commercial venue for ICS 2

Status of the Proton Source and LEBT Controls at Catania • • The Controls

Status of the Proton Source and LEBT Controls at Catania • • The Controls for the Proton Source were commissioned during September in two consecutive visits [Visit 1][Visit 2] The Emittance Meter Unit (EMU) has been delivered to Catania with controls this week. It is being commissioned at the moment Beam Current Monitor (BCM) and Faraday Cup (FC) also have functional controls. So, all the basic elements regarding control in order to finalize the Protons Source Commissioning are now in place. Different issues appeared along this period. The major ones were solved and some minor ones are still working progress. – – – • Major Issue with the Motion in the Emittance Meter Unit at Saclay [ICSHWI-230] blocking EMU commissioning. The issue was solved in w 1647. Major issue in timing system, blocking commissioning [ICSHWI-150]. Solved in a Timing System Commisioning Visit in w 1645 Problems in the archiving service [ISLI-89][ ISLI-74]. The solution to this issue has been found and it will be implemented possibly this week, during the EMU commissioning visit Problems in the grounding of the acquisition of the Faraday Cup. Solved during the Timing System Commisioning Visit in w 1645 Timing link status fail in PMC-EVR [ ISLI-65 ]. Work in Progress Next Steps: – – – Continue making improvements derived from the Proton Source Commissioning (mainly HMI) and fix the remaining issues. Finalize the development for the LEBT Controls Prepare for the migration to MTCA 3

EV Graph Ready Current Status • Cumulative cost variance for ICS is within established variance reporting thresholds • Cumulative schedule variance exceeds reporting thresholds, mainly: • -307 k€ due to deferred PSS procurements, such as PLC devices and other field equipment for the oxygen depletion monitoring system. • -230 k€ due to delays for in-kind agreement with PSI/Switzerland, preventing to formally report EV in a significant part of work package 04 Hardware 4

Issues • Worry about the in-kind contract/financing flow situation in Switzerland risk for some partners is increasing towards critical level – We now need to continue supporting commercial partners with ICS cash to not stop activities in the project – One in-kind partner is trying to negotiate the “credit” from their institute since their internal funding has been consumed while waiting for ESS in-kind funds • Complex situation around the radiation monitoring system for PSS 1; difficulties in defining the specifications for the system – In-kind contribution seems either small or • Significant increase in ICS procurement activities. – A risk exists that these activities may enter the critical path if we are not diligent • Handover of buildings to ESS Operations should be done including the Integrated Control System parts 7
