IBM TIVOLI Victoria Sardi
IBM Tivoli Management Framework Ø Systems management platform previously owned by Tivoli Systems Inc. , acquired by IBM in 1996 and moved into IBM's Software Group division. Ø The Framework is a CORBA-based architecture that allows the platform to manage large numbers of remote locations or devices. Ø Tivoli Modules: o o o IBM Tivoli Framework IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Web Infrastructure IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases IBM Tivoli Net. View IBM Tivoli Switch Level Analyzer IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console IBM Tivoli Manager for Exchange IBM Tivoli Web Site Analyzer IBM Tivoli Business Systems Manager Peregrine Service Center
IBM Tivoli Management Architecture
IBM Tivoli Net. View is a scalable, comprehensive, distributed network solution that helps provide you with the flexibility to manage networks. It can also let you discover TCP/IP networks, display network topologies, correlate and manage events and simple network management protocol (SNMP) traps, monitor network health and gather performance data. Highlights o Measure availability and provide fault isolation for problem management o Use a Web console to provide broad network management in varied locations o Manage regions that are segmented by highly restrictive firewalls o Compartmentalize or restrict operator actions and views of the network o Develop reports on network trends and analysis o Integration with other network management products o Collection building for management of critical business systems o Maintaining of device inventory for asset management
Net. View Management Architecture
Network Auto Discover Net. View has the ability to automatically discover and monitor network devices with the following key features: o Automatic discovery o Polling (monitoring network). o Checking device configuration. o Graphical representation of the network topology. o Traps and events. o Collecting SNMP performance data with the snmp. Collect tool. A seed file can be used to control network discovery: o Contains hostnames or IP addresses. o Allows you to define your management region. o Limit discovery or even exclude nodes. o DHCP nodes can be managed by a seed file.
Network Monitoring o Enables you to check the up or down state of the network devices on a regular basis. o Can query using PING or SNMP requests. o Polling intervals, retries, timeouts can be adjusted to suit particular network conditions, types of devices, or load on the Net. View server. o Certain devices can be polled using SNMP and others with ICMP
Checking Device Configuration o For devices that Net. View has already discovered it is possible that their configuration has changed. Net. View has the ability to check these devices on a regular basis to update what it knows about that device (corrects the topology as shown on the map). o This occurs without user intervention – once every 24 hours for devices that are SNMP enabled. o Configuration check reads route tables of routers and learns of new devices Graphical Representation o Net. View uses a series of submaps to display the hierarchy of devices to represent the network topology. o Each submap can have a series of connected symbols which differ in shape depending on the type of network device being represented. o The symbols are also representing the network devices’ availability, up or down, by the change in color.
Traps and Events o Net. View receives information about changes that affect devices from traps and events generated by agents that monitor the devices. o There are 2 type of traps: Unsolicited: traps that are sent from remote network devices to the Net. View server. Internal: traps which are internal to Net. View and these are known as events.
Collecting SNMP Performance Data o Net. View has the capability of collecting, comparing, and storing SNMP data from remote network devices that have an active SNMP agent. o It can also check collected values against user defined thresholds and generates events if the thresholds are exceeded. 10
Other Functionalities o o o Restrictive firewall support Compartmentalization Policy-based management Cisco integration Automated event response Router fault isolation
