IB Psych 11 26 18 Turn in Nothing

IB Psych 11. 26. 18 Turn in: • Nothing Take out : Ø Planner Ø Notes Ø Note-taking devices Today’s Learning Objectives: Ø I can organize my thoughts about at least one study on the Cognitive Approach. Today’s Agenda: • SAQ—The Core: Cognitive Approach HW: • Find a Cog study and create an OUTLINE for an SAQ.

SAQ Structure Suggestions 1. Address the command term and prompt immediately. While not an essay, think of this as your “introduction. ” – Prompt: Describe one study of conformity. • “In describing one study in relation to conformity, the following narrative will outline the details of this concept, using examples from [performed research]. ” – WHY: at least two reasons. INSERT NAMED RESEARCH HERE!!! 1. It demonstrated your understanding of the command term to your reader—who happen to be human, and can be immediately impressed with your knowledge of all things IB… 2. It provides an anchor to YOU to help keep you on point throughout the response.

SAQ Structure Suggestions 2. Define any terms that warrant further demonstration of knowledge. – Conformity 3. Apply the defined word beyond the definition to demonstrate your understanding of the word in relation to a more general population. – Put it in “layman’s” terms…

SAQ Structure Suggestions SAMRC (SCRAM…) 4. Name and address the research study (Hopefully you’ve already done this in your intro…) – By name and year is best…not a defined requirement, but again, the readers are human…if you make them work harder, chances are it will be harder to award marks. 5. Deal with the details of the Study 1. Aim 2. Method—type of study & participants, as well as the procedure 3. Results 4. Conclusion

An Organizational Technique (PEE) adapted from Thomas Galvez, IB Teacher at Saigon International School Point = Establishes the main idea you will explain in your paragraph- rephrase the question/prompt. • Command Term & Definitions of concepts Evidence = A detail or specific example to support your point- RESEARCH STUDY (SAMRC) • Name and know the details of your study! Explanation = Connecting the relevance of the evidence to your point- so what? What does it tell us about behavior in context of the prompt? • Tie this back to the CT and prompt…

Is this the best possible If not, what might Using one psychological study, example? explain how physiology and improve cognitionit? interact. P = Physiology affects many cognitive processes. One example is how the hormone cortisol influences memory. Which Learning Outcome is being addressed? ? ? #1, 7, 8, 9, 10? ? ? E = In a laboratory experiment, a 1999 study by Newcomer et al. investigated how cortisol influences memory functioning. Cortisol is a stress hormone, and it is believed that prolonged secretion of cortisol is the cause of the memory impairment, which is one of the symptoms of chronic stress. The research used three experimental groups. Group one was given 40 mg of cortisol in a tablet per day; group two was given 160 mg of cortisol, and group three was given a placebo tablet. After four days, the participants were asked to listen to and recall a prose paragraph that tested their verbal declarative memory. The results indicated that the participants who were given the high level of cortisol showed a significant impairment of memory. E = This study supports the claim that there is a link between physiology and cognition. It is known from scanner studies that chronic stress can result in shrinking of the hippocampus, a brain structure associated with memory. Newcomer’s study showed that even short-term increases in cortisol can have a damaging effect on memory; thus, it is causing the shrinkage of the hippocampus. It can be concluded that there is a cause and effect relationship between levels of cortisol and memory processes.

Cognitive Topics TOPIC POSSIBLE PROMPT General • Ethical considerations related to research studies in the cognitive approach to studying behavior. • How and why particular research methods are used in the cognitive approach. • Evaluation of research methods used to study cognitive processes. Cognitive processing • Schema theory • Multi-store model of memory • Thinking and decision making (The concepts of thinking and decision making will be interchangeable. ) • Working memory model Reliability of cognitive processes • Reconstructive memory • Cognitive biases (Candidates should be able to discuss two biases). Emotion and cognition • One theory of how emotion affects a cognitive process - e. g. flashbulb memory theory
