IB Music SL Class 2 -Year Course 11 th & 12 th grade Covers History, Composition/Practice, and Performance. Fosters independent investigation and learning Project-Based Summatives Embedded in Existing Fine Arts Classes
Topics in IB Music Standard Level Year 1 (11 th grade) Topic breakdown Music History Covers basics of Western Art Music historical time periods and major works. Exploration of Ao. Is within historical periods World Music Student-led learning regarding various World Music genres of interest. Opportunities for Performance and composition. Electronic Music Theory Music Performance Basics of music production Covers basics of music composition and theory. New IB curriculum has substantial composition requirements. Year 2 (12 th grade) Topic breakdown Exploring Music in Context Based on Two Areas of Inquiry(External Assessment) 1. Written Paper-2400 Words max 2. Audio upload of studied works 3. Student Composition inspired by research 4. Student Performance Adaptation based on research Presenting Music (External Assessment) Breadth Covers All 4 Areas of Inquiry 1. Program Notes, Track List, Scores/Visuals for created works, Bibliography 2. Creator- Can by composition or improvisation, includes Music Tech 3. Performer- Recordings from Performing Group- includes 2 minutes of student on individual part Experimenting with Music (Internal Assessment) 1. Experimentation Report- Experimenting with Creating and Performing. Topics in IB Visual Arts Higher Level Year 1 (11 th grade) Visual Arts in Context Visual Art Methods Communicating Visual Arts Topic breakdown Artists & Why They Make Art Ways of Making Art Ways of Presenting Art Theoretical Practice Students identify their own work and work of others to understand where and why pieces are selected for public display. Art-Making Practice Students develop their own work for presentation (how they want to communicate with their artwork and audience) Curational Practice Students reflect on what makes their art effective pieces for exhibition, based on their intentions and messages they want to communicate with their artwork Visual Arts Journal Embedded into Performing Music Group
Year 2 (12 th grade) Part 1: Comparative Study (External Assessment) 20% Part 2: Process Portfolio (External Assessment) 40% Part 3: Exhibition (Internal Assessment) 40% Topic breakdown Analyze & Compare different artworks by different artists 1. Students submit 10 -15 screens which compare 3 artworks of different contexts 2. Students submit 3 -5 additional screens which analyze/explain how their work was influenced by the art and artists examined 3. Students submit a list of sources used Student Selected Works as Evidence 1. Students submit 13 -25 screens that cover 3 art-making forms Student Selected Works for Showcase 1. Students submit a curational of 700 words 2. Students submit 8 -11 artworks 3. Students submit exhibition text (title, medium, size and intention) for each selected artwork Students submit 2 photographs of their overall exhibition (not assessed)
