IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their difference, can also be right.

How do I get an IB Diploma? • 2 -year program (11 th and 12 th grades) • You must take 6 courses – 3 Higher Level – 3 Standard Level • You must complete the Core – Theory of Knowledge class – Extended Essay – CAS (Creativity, Action, Service)
Diploma Program Classes • You must take 1 class from each subject Group – Language A (English) – Language B (Foreign Language) – Individuals and Societies – Experimental Sciences – Mathematics – The Arts (You can skip the Arts if you take a second Science or Individuals and Societies class)
Higher Level Courses Language and Literature Spanish History of the Americas Biology Visual Arts *All of these courses are 2 years long
Standard Level Courses Spanish French Math Visual Arts Economics Chemistry Math Studies *You must take at least one 2 -year SL course *We are still fine-tuning which will be 1 -year and which 2 -year
Diploma Core • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – 1 year course that explores the different ways we know what we know. • Extended Essay (EE) – College level research paper completed independently on a subject of your choice. • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) – 150 hours of extracurricular activity.

How do I get Credit? • Each course has an Internal Assessment (teacher graded assignment) and External Assessment (end of course exam) • IB combines your scores on both to give you a class score between 1 and 7 • TOK and EE scores combine for between 1 and 3 points total • A perfect Diploma equals 45 points (6 classes x 7 points + 3 points for Core) • To earn a Diploma you need a total of 24 points
Benefits • A Diploma score of 30 or higher earns you 30 quarter units (20 semester units) at all UC’s • Exclusive universities are 2 times more likely to accept a Diploma students application than a non-Diploma student • CAS projects can result in scholarships, large and small
Course Students • You can take some of the Diploma courses, without taking them all • You enroll in the classes you want • You take all the assessments for that class • You stick it out for 2 years • UC gives 8 quarter units for every HL class passed with a 5 or higher
Current Timeline • We received a “Yes” for each of the 40 criteria on which our Application was assessed. • Visiting team will be here Sept. 26 th -27 th • We will receive authorization in Spring 2014 • I will meet with students to inform and help set them up for registration between now and early next semester
IB Parent Group • We are looking for parents willing to meet with our IB Visiting team • Thursday September 26 th 2: 30 – 3: 30 PM • They will be gauging community interest in the program • Please indicate on the sign in form if you can make this.
