IB and College Admission There are no guarantees in college admissions. “There is no definite plan or specific combination of factors that will guarantee a student admission to their preferred institution. Colleges and universities review many aspects of prospective student applications in order to determine which students will be admitted. ” ~NACAC
IB and College Admission � Participating in the IB Program does not automatically secure you a spot at the college or university of your choice… however…it can help.
IB and College Admission: How Can IB Help? § Personal Level: ◦ Solid skills necessary to be successful at any college: study skills, time management, organization, critical thinking, global awareness § College Level: ◦ Rigorous coursework �Colleges—especially selective institutions—like to see that students have challenged themselves in high school.

IB and College Admission: How Can IB Help? § § The average acceptance rate of IB students into university/college is 22 percentage points higher than the average acceptance rate of the total population. The acceptance rate of IB Students into Ivy League institutions is between 3 and 13 percentage points higher compared to the total population acceptance rate.

If a highly selective school is your goal: § Maintain the most rigorous IB course selections (HL in core classes) § IB Math Pathways § Science Pathways § Earn exceptional grades § Strong test scores § Strong extracurricular activities o Sincere interest o Leadership role o Depth not breadth o How are you using your skill? § Diverse college list: Realistic and Reach

Let’s talk about those Ivies… § As we saw earlier, competition is fierce o The lowest acceptance rates for IB and total population § Many factors contributing to low rates o Increasing number of applications for the same number of spots (more U. S. students; more international apps; ease of online application) § Don’t succumb to Ivy fever—your student doesn’t have to go to an Ivy to be successful o IB students often more prepared than their post secondary peers § Books that might broaden your perspective: o Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be (Frank Bruni) o Looking Beyond the Ivy League (Loren Pope) o Colleges That Change Lives (Loren Pope)
