I wander I wonder Migration A Global Citizenship
I wander…. …. I wonder Migration – A Global Citizenship Approach
Lesson 2: The reasons
Lesson 2 Learning Intentions. We will. . …. explore the reasons behind a variety of migrations. …. develop our knowledge of global migration. …. be able to describe migrations in terms of push and pull factors. …identify common traits amongst migrants. …make links between migration and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Activity 2. 1 Why do people migrate? Statement: ‘People want to move to the UK’ Ask yourself why? to this question and then ask why? again and again. Eg ‘to flee war’ or ‘to earn more money’: Why? Try and think of some reasons for leaving their home country (push factors) as well as reasons for moving to the UK (pull factors). Write your reasons in a flow diagram poster like the on the next slide. Learners then review their poster. This could be also done as a Push Factor eg “A young person leaves Inverness for Glasgow”
Activity 2. 1 - Example People Move to the UK Why? They believe they will have a better life Why? Because the UK is a rich developed country Because the UK has many companies and industries Why? A long history of economic development and dominance Why?
A migration model
Plenary discussion 2. 1 • What do you think are the main causes of migration? • What are examples of Push and Pull Factors? • What are more important, Push or Pull factors?
Activity 2. 2: Would you leave home? Pupils take on the role of one of six characters (character cards – doctor, farmer, elderly woman, etc). The narrator (teacher? ) reads out a chronological series of news headlines. There are two sets of headlines, one relating to conflict and one to poverty. After each headline has been read, pupils decide whether they would move or stay.
Roles
Plenary Discussion 2. 2 • From this exercise can we say what are the characteristics of a typical migrant? • What were the main push and pull factors that led a person to leave in that exercise? • What does it mean for the donor country if it loses people through emigration?
Activity 2. 3: The SDGs and Migration
The Sustainable Development Goals • The Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 for the year 2030. • The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. • (Available online at https: //sustainabledevelopment. un. org/? menu=1300). (With classes over 17, this becomes a pair task. )
Activity 2. 3: First task • Choose one of the SDGs and explain its potential link to migration. • For example, if there were no progress in SDG 6. . . • …. people would be pushed away by disease and lack of drinking water. • (https: //www. concern. org. uk/resources/new-global-hunger-report-wake-call-links-between-conflictforced-migration-and-hunger)
Activity 2. 3: ‘Speed dating’ task • Walk around the room and as pupils pair up, they introduce their goal and the information about life without progress with this goal, before moving on to the next ‘date’. Activity 2. 3: ‘Inside Outside Circle’ task • Pupils form into two circles, one inside the other. The outside circle moves round and is stopped. The pupil(s) pairs up with their adjacent inside circle. They have to combine their two SDGs to generate a scenario which would act as a push factor for migration. Example on next page.
Inside Outside Circle example • ‘Without Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) combined with a lack of Decent Work (SDG 8) people would feel trapped by prejudice into unsafe, low paid work which may cause them unhappiness and to leave their homes’.
Plenary Discussion 2. 3 Share the scenarios that were created. Are there any of the SDGs that are particularly connected with migration? (This can also be done as a concept web where pupils stand in a circle and use string to make links between their SDG, other SDGs and migration. )
Lesson 2 Success Criteria Review Can we. . …. give a reason(s) for a migration? …. be able to describe migrations in terms of push and pull factors? …make links between migration and the Sustainable Development Goals?
