By Dr. Haim Ginott I’ve come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized. Choose…joy, inspiration, humor, healing, de-escalation and humanization. Choose it today…. choose it everyday!!!!!

Behavior: Norms: anything that supports or falls within the laws of society. Excesses: It is a behavior we do too frequently, too long a period of time, or with too much force, strength or intensity. (talking, moving, fidgeting, laughing, poop!) Deficits: It is a behavior we don’t do enough to reap the benefits, long enough or with enough force, strength or intensity. (focus, impulse control, self-regulation, humor)
Humor: Life is too short to be serious all the time…. if you can’t laugh at your self… call me (603 -706 -3288)…. . I’ll laugh at you!

Ignoring Behavior: • Please stop!
Even the most senseless behavior makes sense to the person doing it. What are the common messages our behavior communicates? • I want to be noticed. • I want an emotional response from you. • I do not want to talk to you. • I want social interaction. • I do not want you near me. • I need to know specifically what is expected of me right now. • I feel mad. • I cannot manage all these demands. • This is too difficult. • I feel unsafe. • I need a break.
Sticker Charts • Blind obedience • 5 years old and older: We should expect 90% compliance • Behavior is a symptom of a problem…. . is the problem ever a sticker? • Real life experience: Sticker charts do not translate into real life! • Oops! I forgot the teaching piece!
