The Italian Educational System • Education in Italy is state-controlled and all schools, both public and private, have to follow the instructions and norms related laid down by the Ministry of Education, University and Research. • Education is compulsory and free of charge for all children between the ages of 6 and 14.
Pre-school Education Nursery school (scuola dell'infanzia): • It is not compulsory • It lasts for 3 years • Children’s age: from 3 to 5
Primary Education • Children go to primary school five years, they begin at the age of f 5/6. • Pupils leave at the age of 11. • No exams to be taken by pupils at the end of the 5 th class. • Pupils have to do some tests, Invalsi tests( in Spring and taken on a national level on a scheduled day)- Aim: to assess the level of preparation attained.
Secondary Education • Secondary ( at lower secondary level) or middle school: • It lasts for 3 years • Pupils’ age: from 11 to 14 • At the end of the 3 year-school pupils take an exam, if they pass all the tests of the exam they achieve the certificate called “Diploma of Licenza Media”
Secondary Education at upper level It consists of several courses: • classical, • scientific, • artistic, • technical, • vocational • teacher training options.
Secondary High Education Subjects Studied • Classical Course (Liceo Classico) lasts for five years, with emphasis on the Humanistic subjects (Latin, ancient Greek, Italian, Philosophy, foreign language, History, Geography), but also scientific subjects, especially in the second cycle ( Maths, Physics, Science, Art, Chemistry).
Secondary High Education Subjects Studied • Scientific course (Liceo Scientifico) also lasts for five years, but provides more specialized preparation in scientific subjects since the first class. • Linguistic course (Liceo Linguistico) focuses on the study of foreign languages together with the corresponding literature and civilization.
Secondary High Education Subjects Studied • The technical education is provided by technical schools (Istituti Tecnici). • Subjects change according to the courses. • Last for five years. • Students get a diploma and become: Accountant/Surveyor/ICT programmer/ • Vocational secondary schools provide for competences in a great variety of jobs (chef, waiter, ect. )
Secondary High Education – Final Exam • All programmes are aimed at developing knowledge, skills and competences for the final exam, called “Esame di Stato”. At the end of the five-year course all students have to pass written and oral tests ( 3 written tests, of which 2 tests chosen by the Ministry, one chosen by the teachers of each class). • In addition: CERTILINGUA, a special certificate
Secondary High Education • Certilingua: Students can apply for it if they have specific requirements, 2 certificates assessing skills in 2 foreign languages level B 2, one 35 -hour teaching module in a subject ( science, maths, physics, etc. ) learned in a foreign language and a portfolio showing European competence achieved through the participation in European projects ( Comenius, stages, etc)
The Reform of Secondary High Education (Since School year 2010 -2011) • High education involves the following schools listed below and renewed according to the recent School Reform. • 1. Liceo artistico • 2. Liceo classico • 3. Liceo linguistico • 4. Liceo musicale e coreutico • 5. Liceo scientifico opzione scienze applicate • 6. Liceo delle scienze umane opzione economico-sociale • New Technical schools: two sectors ( 11 courses) • New Vocational Schools: two sectors (ten courses) •
Admission to the University • After passing the final exams, students get the “Diploma” • The “Diploma”is the requirement for the admission to university studies, as well as to the world of work. • Lowest marks: 60/100 • Highest marks: 100/100 and honours • Entry tests for the admission to University
