I before E • This is for Fourth grade up and designed to make aware the complexities of the English language and the errors that can be created by applying an over used spelling rule. • The content is language arts or can be modified for a specific reading lesson. • Many of you have heard this phrase but forewarned is forearmed is an equally good phrase!
Objectives • Go over familiar I before E rule • Pre-assessment test is given for spelling knowledge and familiarization • Familiarize with common words that are spelled I before E and E before I • Recite, recognize and come up with possible mnemonic ideas as class activities • Post-test to see what was retained
… but my Granny said to me! • English spelling is very difficult and you will not always have spell check to correct you as you go. Also, when you are reading it is important to know what those funny letters are saying to you even though those same funny letters do not always follow their own rules! Activities Leading to Post-test • On Blackboard – using raise your hand – have activities such as fill in the blank (using pen tool or chat box) in a paragraph or sentence. • Using green check/red X have examples of words, in groups of three, with two of the words misspelled and a green check goes on the correct spelling. • Pointer tools can be used to point out errors and what needs to be corrected. • The microphone can be used to verify pronunciation or to call out if a person is not responding or falling behind.
Post Test • Each Student can use the chat box for recording their answers to a traditional spelling test. • Fill in the blank can be used to demonstrate word use, content instruction and vocabulary instruction along with the correct spelling and comprehension.
