HYBRID CLASSROOM BRIEFING NUS Centre for Instructional Technology
• Safe-distancing measures limit classroom attendance. • Students may not be able to attend class. Why hybrid classrooms? They may not be able to: • leave their campus zone, • leave their country and/or enter Singapore, or • attend in person as they: • may be ill, • exhibit signs of illness, or • are on Stay-Home Notice or Quarantine.
What is the hybrid classroom? Teaching a class on campus: • face-to-face, and • online at the same time. • This means: • those in class need a way to hear and see online students, and • vice-versa.
How to teach in a hybrid classroom? • Keeping this in mind: • those in class need a way to hear and see online students, and • vice-versa. • Methods will differ depending on the room type: • Tutorial Rooms • Seminar Rooms • Lecture Theatres

Setup Distribute Set up Allow Distribute instructions to students. Set up recurring Zoom meeting. Launch during class. Allow your students to: • Unmute themselves. • Use virtual background. • Rename themselves, so that they can append their name with Online. (for breakouts). • Text chat with others.
Audio IMPORTANT: Remind everyone to mute themselves when not speaking. Speaking: use a clip-on microphone or a Bluetooth earpiece Listening: speakers on your laptop or a Bluetooth earpiece Allow meeting participants to unmute themselves. If you have an assistant, s/he can control the muting.
• View of the class: • Position webcam Video • Presentation/software: • Screen share • Whiteboard: • DIY visualizer • onscreen annotation • position webcam
Coordination Assign a TA (preferable) or student to assist with the session. S/he can: • • • prompt you if there is a query, answer questions about the lesson or simple technical issues, assign students to breakout groups*, mute all if there is audio feedback, and manage Poll Everywhere Q&A, if you use Poll Everywhere. Record the meeting.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ONLINE STUDENTS
Join the online meeting during your class. Zoom setup Append your display name with (Online). • So that everyone knows that you are joining the class remotely and can assist you if needed. This information is also useful for grouping students for breakouts.
Audio Mute yourself when not speaking. Make sure you are connected to audio. Raise your hand virtually in Zoom if you want to speak. Unmute yourself only when you are asked to speak. Remember to mute yourself once done. If the lecturer cannot hear you, ask a classmate to relay your question/comment or use text chat to type your question/comment instead.
• Start the webcam in Zoom. Video • For privacy, you may use a virtual background. • If there are bandwidth issues in the physical location, stop the webcam.
Online to online • If needed, you can text chat with other students online or in class. • If you are placed into breakout rooms, you can unmute your microphone and speak freely.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR IN-CLASS STUDENTS
Zoom setup Join the online meeting during your class. Mute yourself when you are not speaking.
Audio Earphones work best. Keep one side off to listen in class, the other on to listen to classmates online. Do not use laptop speakers if you do not have earphones. Mute your microphone when not speaking. Help your online classmates to relay questions and comments, if needed.
Video • Start the webcam in Zoom. • If there are bandwidth issues in the physical location, stop the webcam.
ADDITIONAL TOOLS
Poll Everywhere • You can use Poll Everywhere’s Q&A feature to get questions from the class. • Students can upvote / downvote questions. • Levels the playing field between online and in-class students.
• You can go into small group discussions in a hybrid class. Zoom Breakout Rooms • Recommendation: do not have mixed groups i. e. groups with both online and inclass students. Audio feedback might be an issue. • Recall the online students were asked to append their display name with (Online). • This allows you to identify online students to rearrange the Zoom breakout room allocation.
• You can use your phone as a DIY virtualiser. • This works best if you have a phone mount. DIY Virtualiser • i. Phone: Zoom accepts the i. Phone as a screen sharing source. Once you have shared the i. Phone’s screen, launch the camera app. • Android: Make sure Zoom app is installed. Join the existing meeting. Share the Android device’s screen and launch the camera app.

LECTURE THEATRES Hybrid Classroom
Lecture Theatre Required Software: • Zoom (already installed in all Lecture Theatres) • Poll Everywhere (optional) Required Hardware: • Existing Camera (installed at the back of the LT) • A wireless microphone provided in the LT wired • Desktop in the LT • All equipment are wired to the AV system and Zoom
Before class • Create Zoom meeting in Lumi. NUS Conferencing tool. • Set Zoom meeting to Cloud recording and send meeting invite to students before the class. • Send a request to CIT if you wish to record with Panopto simultaneously.
During class • Login to Zoom. • Enable audio and video in Zoom and ensure online students are able hear and see. • Provide housekeeping instructions to online students, eg. Raise hand, mute yourself except during Q&A session. • Use Zoom share screen functions (to share the slides, whiteboard or visualiser if supported).
During class • Take breaks in between to check on the chats for any questions. • Repeat the question if a F 2 F student ask a question. • Use Poll Everywhere for all students to up vote each other questions.
After class • Recording uploaded to Cloud and students can access from Lumi. NUS Conferencing tool. • If recorded with Panopto, students can access from Web Lecture in Lumi. NUS.
AVOIDING PITFALLS
Audio feedback • With multiple microphones and speakers in a confined space, the chances for disruptive audio feedback is high. • Everyone in the meeting (even those joining from outside the classroom) should be disciplined with their use of audio. When not speaking, microphones should be muted.
Online students feel left out • Teaching staff • Remember to check in with the online students. • Encourage them to ask questions in Zoom text chat or raise hands to their webcam or in Zoom. • Remind everyone to mute their microphones when not speaking. • Provide a neutral platform – such as Poll Everywhere – for students to ask questions, if possible.
Online students feel left out • Students in class • Help classmates to highlight questions or hand raises to your teacher. • You can also relay text chat questions to your teacher.
Limited bandwidth Campus wi-fi relatively robust, but not built with these in mind: • Multiple web conferences in a small space, and • Multiple web conferences in many venues simultaneously. If there are bandwidth issues, everyone should disable their webcams.
Final notes • These are recommendations, a starting point. • If at all possible, go totally online.
