Humanism What is it? & Why it’s important
Objective & Standard • I can explain and analyze the concept of humanism and its impact on the Renaissance. SPI 7. 46 Describe how humanism led to a revival of classical learning and fostered a new interest in the arts including a balance between intellect and religious faith.
Recap the Renaissance • The love of art and education was a key feature of this time we call the Renaissance. • What does the Renaissance mean? – Rebirth
The Renaissance • New ways of thinking emerged during the Renaissance. At the same time, the period brought a renewed emphasis on the past. • These trends inspired Italian writers and artist to produce many brilliant works.
MA vs. Renaissance • During the Middle Ages, most thinkers in Europe had devoted themselves to religious study. • At the start of the 1300 s, people became less interested in thinking about God, heaven and saints, and more interested in thinking about themselves, their surroundings and their everyday lives.
The Beginning • In the 1300 s Turks conquered much of the Byzantine empire. Scholars seeking to escape the Turks fled to Italy. • Many of the works they brought to Italy were ancient classical writings. • Classical scholars began to rediscover the glories of the Greece and Rome. ……they longed for a renewal of classical culture
Humanities • They studied poetry, history, and art, and Greek and Latin languages. – These subjects are known as humanities • because it was the study of human activities rather than the physical world or the nature of God.
Humanism • The study of humanities led to a movement called humanism. • Humanism is a way of thinking and learning that stresses the importance of human abilities and actions. – The philosophy that all people should strive to be educated in the classical arts, literature, and science. – It looked for realism and human emotion in art. – It also said that it was okay for people to pursue comfort, riches and beauty.
Why is Humanism Important? • It stressed that learning led to a better earthly life – The goals of humanism were to create well-rounded individuals and to encourage people to achieve all they could in life. • Humanism promoted a balance between the intellect and religion. – Humanist thinker still expressed the importance of a Christian life, but people were encouraged to think for themselves. – They taught that people could enjoy life and still be good Christians.
Why is Humanism Important? • Humanism helped to strengthen a growing desire among people to experiment, explore, and create. • An exploration of creativity, learning, and discovery began on the Italian peninsula and gradually spread throughout Europe. • This movement signaled the end of the Middle Ages and the beginnings of a new era.
