HUMANE SLAUGHTER ACT 1978 b Requires that cattle, calves, horses, mules, sheep, goats, swine, and other livestock must be rendered insensible to pain before being shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut.

DIRECTIVE 6900. 1, Rev. 1 11/98, b Humane Handling of Disabled Livestock b Purpose is to ensure humane handling of disabled livestock from time of entering official premises to time of slaughter by humane methods.
Dir. 6900. 1 Rev. 1 b Allows professional judgement to enter Transport Vehicle provided; • Inspection can be adequately conducted • Safety of Inspector can be assured
Dir. 6900. 1 Rev. 1 b Once Vehicle has entered Official Establishment premises, it is considered to be part of that establishment’s premises.
Dir. 6900. 1 Rev. 1 b No retaliatory action can be taken by FSIS or Establishment should the inspector choose to not perform antemortem in the Transport Vehicle on a disabled animal that can not be removed humanely.
