HUMAN SYSTEMS: RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
CONTENT OBJECTIVES • TSW identify the major parts/organs of the respiratory system and describe their functions. • TSW understand the flow of air in the humans. • TSW know the importance of the respiratory system.
LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES • TSW summarize in writing the respiratory cycle including the definition and function of the major parts/organs of the respiratory system. • TSW explain the flow of air in humans. • TSW state why this system is important.
KEY VOCABULARY: • Respiration • Nasal cavity • Gases • Pharynx • Glottis • Larynx • Trachea • Lungs • Bronchioles • Alveoli • diaphragm
VOCABULARY DEFINITIONS: • Respiration: the exchange of gases across a surface by inspiration and expiration, aka inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide or breathing in and out • Gases: oxygen, O 2 and carbon dioxide, CO 2 • Nasal cavity: oxygen enters here and is warmed moistened and filtered • pharynx : the throat; from the nasal cavity the oxygen passes through this and to the glottis
VOCABULARY… • glottis: the opening to the trachea, covered by a flap of skin called the epiglottis • Larynx: voice box; made of cartilage, this is what closes when we hold our breath • Trachea: airway; a tube of cartilage that branches out to the bronchi • lungs: where the bronchi lead to and houses the bronchioles, and the alveoli sacs
VOCABULARY… • bronchi: two branches from the trachea that lead to the bronchioles of the lungs • bronchioles: small tubes in the lungs that lead to the alveoli • alveoli: air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange of O 2 and CO 2 occurs • diaphragm: “movable floor” or thick sheet of muscle that contracts and pushes air in and out
THE RESPIRATORY CYCLE
THE RESPIRATORY CYCLE IN WORDS 1. Air or oxygen enters through the nasal cavity and is warmed, moistened and filtered. 2. From the nasal cavity, oxygen travels down the throat or the pharynx and passes through the glottis in to the larynx. 3. From the larynx, oxygen travels down the trachea or “windpipe” into the 2 bronchi 4. From the bronchi, oxygen travels to smaller tubes called bronchioles 5. Once in the bronchioles, oxygen goes to the alveoli or “air sacs” where gas exchange occurs. Our blood takes in oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide.
GAS EXCHANGE
IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM… • Breathing keeps us alive! • Health: • Diseases: emphysema • Smoking • Respiratory system is connected to all the other human systems • i. e. O 2 carried by blood of circulatory system
