WHAT’S THE PROBLEM Human Rights are the rights inherited to all human beings of whatever � Nationality � Sex � Place of residence � National or Ethnic origin � Color � Religion � Language � Or any other status In the 21 st century people still face injustice, inequality, and discrimination against their � Race � Gender � Sexual Orientation
RACIAL PREJUDICE Racial prejudice is a preconceived opinion of a person because of their racial origin Examples include � The death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland � The shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND Twenty-five year old and African American, Freddie Gray, was arrested April 12 th, 2015 on a weapons charge Handcuffed, Gray was dragged into a police van, fully capable of voice and motion Upon being removed from the van, Gray could not breath, and was rather unresponsive Medical attention was called upon at 9: 24 AM Gray died seven days late due to spinal cord injury It is believed that police drove recklessly in order to toss Gray around while unbuckled
FERGUSON, MISSOURI A police officer of Ferguson, Missouri stopped two young African American boys, Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson, walking on the street He told them to get on the sidewalk or he would shoot them Brown, terrified at gun point, began to run with his hands above his head yelling “I don’t have a gun, stop shooting!” The officer fired repeatedly, hitting Brown approximately six times
SEXUAL ORIENTATION INEQUALITY Sexual Orientation is a person’s sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are attracted The most common prejudice against sexual orientation is for LGBT which includes Lesbian � Gay � Bisexual � Transgender �
DISCRIMINATION AND LEGALITY Discrimination of sexual orientation typically includes � Being subjected to negative behavior � Harassment � Denial of certain benefits Different states have different laws regarding same sex marriage � Legal same sex marriage- 37 states � Bans again same sex marriages- 13 states
GENDER INEQUALITY Gender inequality refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender Typically arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles Gender Pay Gap � Women paid 78% of what men are paid � Washing DC women receive 90% of a man’s dollar � Louisiana women receive 66% of a man’s dollar
WHAT IS FEMINISM What people think feminism is � Belittling men � Making women more superior � Giving women a greater advantage � Having the right to wear whatever clothes they want What feminism really is � The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of political, social, and economic equality to men
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN Regarding racial prejudice Minority races will continue being oppressed � Innocent young men could continue dying � Regarding sexual orientation discrimination Innocent people will be denied the ability to express themselves � Couples will be unable to get married because their love is different and not understood � Regarding gender inequality Gender roles will continue to dictate both men and women � Women will never make as much money as a man �
WHAT MUST BE DONE Understanding � People need learn the facts of what is going on every day and understand the situation from another race, sexual orientation, or gender Solidarity Stop fighting for racial rights, gay marriage laws, or a equality for women to me � Come together as a group of individuals that are all equal and all deserve the same rights and equality as one another � Human Rights �
CONCLUSION This problem does not belong to � A white person � A black person � A homosexual person � A man � A woman This problem belongs to every single person who deserves to be treated equal Being the next generation to have a voice, it is our job to � Understand the problem � Join forces for a common goal � Make a change
