Human Reproduction
Functions of Human Reproduction 1. Survival of the species 2. Produce gametes (egg/sperm) 3. Nurture offspring 4. Produce hormones
1. Sexual Reproduction=sperm fertilizing egg Puberty: Cannot reproduce until after puberty Hormones: LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone)
2. Female Reproductive System Functions Produces Provides eggs (ova) place for baby to develop. Menstruates if fertilization doesn’t occur Produces estrogen
Female (cont. ) Estrogen Hormone that causes: 1. female sex characteristics 2. Develops eggs 3. Keeps the reproductive cycle on track
Female (cont. ) 5 major parts of the female reproductive system 1. Ovaries 2. Fallopian tubes 3. Uterus 4. Cervix 5. Vagina

Ovaries Eggs are produced and mature. Produces Hormones http: //www. ricancercouncil. org/img/cervical. gif
Fallopian Tubes Tunnel uterus. Site for egg to travel to of Fertilization Fertilized egg moves to uterus and attaches to wall= pregnancy
Uterus Hollow, organ Home muscular to a developing fetus.
Cervix Allows sperm to enter menstrual Leads blood to exit to the vagina.
Vagina Birth canal Canal that joins the cervix) to the outside of the body

3. Male Reproductive System Main Function: Produce sperm to be delivered to the FALLOPIAN TUBE, where an ova is fertilized
Male (cont. ) Males produce sperm after puberty Testes (testicles) produce sperm Testosterone Sperm male is the hormone for: production sex characteristics
Male (cont. ) Consists of: 1. A pair of testes 2. Scrotum 3. A network of excretory ducts a) b) c) epididymis ejaculatory ducts vas deferens Seminal vesicles 5. Prostate 6. Urethra 7. Penis 4.

Testes / testicles (Gonads) Produce sperm Spermatogenesis Produce testosterone
Scrotum – Regulates testes temperature.
Duct System: (3 parts) Epididymis Where sperm mature. Ejaculatory ducts empty into the urethra. Vas Deferens Transports mature sperm to the urethra.
Seminal vesicles Produce semen a sugarrich fluid that provides energy to sperm. Attached to vas deferens
Prostate Gland Mix semen and sperm before entering the urethra.
Urethra Tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside of the body Also carries semen out of the body
Penis external organ, assists in the transfer of gametes to mate.
