What is migration? l Migration is the movement of people from one place to another.
l Internal Migration is when people migrate within the same country or region ¡ Moving from South Dakota to Utah ¡ Moving from the country (rural area) to the city (urban area) ¡ Resulting in urbanization – growth of cities
l International Migration is when people migrate from one country to another ¡ Moving from the United States to France Interactive Map
Who migrates? l Emigrant – someone who permanently exits or leaves a country. Emigrants leave Africa to find a better home.
Who migrates? l Immigrant – someone who permanently moves into a country Immigrants move into Germany from Turkey.
Why do people migrate? Economic migration - moving to find work or follow a particular career path. l Social migration - moving somewhere for a better quality of life or to be closer to family or friends. l Political migration - moving to escape political persecution or war. l Environmental causes of migration include natural disasters such as flooding. l
