Purpose • Four main points: – Hula dancing – History of hula dancing – Body movements and implements – Connection to my life
What is Hula Dance? • Traditional and religious form of dance • Developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the original settlers of the islands (Indy Hula)
• Represents the words in a song or chant using: – Effortless hand motions – Body movements (Indy Hula)
History of Hula Dance • No one is aware of how hula dance actually came about – Homegrown – Ancient civilization of Mu or Tahiti/some other foreign land – A god or goddess which makes the dance a sacred ritual (Aloha International)
• Male hula dancers – Records say that both men and woman perform • Captain Cook and his crew first arrived in the islands in 1778 (Aloha International)

Body Movements and Implements • Common instrument – Ukulele (a Hawaiian steel guitar) – Known to be the most famous modern hula instruments (Polynesian Cultural Center)
• Examples of body movements: – Wahine (woman)- point hands with fingers outstretched to chest – Kāne (man)- clench fists in front of chest (Angelfire)
Three implements used in hula dance • Ipu • 'Uli • Pu`ili
Connection of hula dancing to my life • Rules for female hula dancers today – Wavy/curly long hair – No nail polish – Red lipstick • Rules for ancient female hula dancers – Not allowed to cut hair or nails – Certain foods were forbidden (Alternative-Hawaii)
• Unique and totally different from other Polynesian dances • Began as a form of worship during religious ceremonies – Later evolved into a form of entertainment (Alternative-Hawaii)
Conclusion • Great hobby to learn • Tell others about the culture!
