The meaning of a title I school § Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for… Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these student’s meet the State’s challenging content standards. Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies Conducting parental Involvement meetings/trainings/activities Recruiting/Hiring/Retaining Professionally Qualified (PQ) Teachers § Being a Title I school also means parent and family engagement and parents’ rights.

What is the 1% set-aside and how are parents involved? § Any district with

What is the 1% set-aside and how are parents involved? § Any district with a Title I Allocation exceeding $500, 000 is required by law to set aside 1% of it’s Title I allocation for parent and family engagement. § Of that 1%, 5% may be reserved at the district for system-wide initiatives related to parental involvement. The remaining 90% must be allocated to all Title I schools in the district. Therefore each Title I school receives its portion of the 90% to implement school -level parent and family engagement. § You, as Title I parents, have the right to be involved in how this money is spent.

The Common Core curriculum • The Common Core State Standards outline the skills and content in English Language Arts and math that students should master in each grade. They also require that students in higher grades be able to read and write well not only in English, but also in social studies, science, and technical subjects. • The standards were designed to ensure that students gain a more in-depth mastery of the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in college and compete in the global workforce. • Common Core are state standards, not a federal government curriculum. • The standards have been adopted by the mass majority of the United States, giving students access to the same rigorous coursework nationwide.

The Georgia milestones • The Milestones is a newly implemented test supported under the Common Core State Standards. • Last year’s testing was an introduction, serving as the benchmark for Clayton County’s overall performance. The score’s will be given before the end of the school year. • The test requires students to engage in critical thinking on various subject matter that requires exemplary performance in writing, language, and mastery understanding of rigorous academic material. • Rather than providing an answer, students are required to delve into the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ by citing textual evidence and providing well-supported explanations.
