WHAT IS AIDS? ➤ AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. ➤ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is caused by HIV and is a late stage of HIV infection. ➤ Not everyone who has HIV advances to this stage. ➤ AIDS is the stage of infection when your immune system is bad damaged and you become very vulnerable to other infections. ➤ Without treatment, people who are diagnosed with AIDS typically survive about 3 years.
HOW CAN SOMEONE GET HIV? ➤ During birth. A Mother to infant. ➤ Passing of sexual body fluids. ➤ Blood to blood contact. Examples include receiving blood/organs from an infected donor, or sharing needles). ➤ Less common ways people are infected include being bitten by someone with HIV or contact between broken skin, wounds or mucous (very low risk of getting HIV).

HEPATITIS ➤ There are 3 main types of Hepatitis, A, B & C. ➤ Hepatitis A is a mild infection (often in children). Sometimes symptoms look like a stomach virus (flu). It can be spread through anything contained with infected stool (poop) or through water, milk and food. ➤ Hepatitis B has a wide range of symptoms, from mild illness to liver disease that could lead to cancer. It is spread through body fluids, blood transfusions, shared needles, sex with an infected person, or from mother to child during birth. ➤ Hepatitis C can lead to chronic liver disease and is associated with liver cancer. It is spread through sharing needles, a tattoo or piercing, blood or organ transplant or sex with an infected person.
PREVENTION ➤ Follow good hygiene and avoid crowded, unhealthy living conditions. ➤ Take extra care when drinking or swimming in areas where sanitation is poor and water quality is uncertain. ➤ Wash your hands after using the washroom.
TREATMENT ➤ Hospitalization could be necessary when symptoms are severe. ➤ No medication is used to treat Hep. A. because it is so short term. ➤ Medication is sometimes used to treat Hep. B. ➤ Medication is always used to treat Hep. C.
