!!!Notes # 3 Spanish – American War!!!
Jose Marti Spain had control over the Island of Cuba since Columbus discovered the new world. But the Cubans were mistreated by the Spanish, and Jose Marti led the rebels. Jose got help (guns and money) from Americans who were worried about Spanish Power in the Caribbean.
Yellow Journalism Americans were worried – a war so close to America could hurt the economy, also, how could America allow so much suffering from a neighbor? However, the government did not want to get involved. Isolationism
Many Americans were interested in what was happening in Cuba. Joseph Pulitzer To make a profit, newspapers competed to tell more interesting stories- even if they had to lie. William Randolph Hearst

!!!Remember the Maine – on to War!!! The U. S. S. Maine was sent to protect American interests in Cuba. On the night of February 15, 1898 the ship blew up, killing 260 men. Congress declared war on April 25, 1898.
Battle of Manila Bay May 1, 1898 The Spanish also controlled the Philippines Islands, which harbored their Pacific naval fleet. The Americans, wanting to protect their Pacific interests, launched an attack against the fleet – led by the daring Commodore Dewey. The Spanish were wiped out, with only 1 American casualty, who passed out from heat exhaustion.
Fighting in the Philippines Americans then landed troops and with the aid of Filipino rebels, kicked out all Spaniards from the Islands.
Fighting in Cuba In early may of 1898, another Spanish Fleet was trapped in Santiago. However, to get to the ships, the Americans needed to take several well defended hills. To make matters worse, the Americans had inferior weapons, the Spanish had the latest superior German weapons.

The End “A splendid little war” With their military devastated- the war ended on August 12, 1898. Americans all over celebrated, not only was it a GREAT victory over a once great empire, but the U. S. got the Philippine Islands, Cuba and Puerto Rico from the Spanish. In the end, only about 400 Americans died in combat, but because of malaria and yellow fever, that number was increased to about 2, 000.
Bucky O’Neill
“The Splendid Little War” What is Yellow journalism? Can you think of a modern example today? Why did the Americans take interest in the Cuban peoples fight against the Spanish? Do you think we should help others in similar situations today? What might happen as a result of the Americans winning a lot of land from Spain? !!!Be Prepared to share!!!
