Trouble for the Soviets The country of Hungary rebelled against the Soviets in October of 1956. Hoping to get help from America, they were crushed in November, the Soviets killed thousands.

Domestic Policy During WWII, the Federal government had control over most of America. When Eisenhower took over, he gave more power to the states. (who knows what Arizona needs more than people from Arizona? )

Federal Highway Act • Signed on June 29, 1956. • This Act started the building of our American Interstate Highway System. • American families were spreading across the country, we needed better roads for this. • Also, the ability to move our military from one part of the country to another became easier.

NASA On October 4, 1957, the Soviets launched the 1 st satellite, called Sputnik, into space. This worried many Americans, “why are they doing better than us? ” Thus, NASA (National Aeronautical Space Administration) was created on July 29, 1958.

Prosperity • When WWII started, America was getting out of the depression. But with America winning the war, we became one of the most powerful and richest nations. • Many Americans made a lot of money off the war. Many veterans went to College thanks to the GI Bill.

Baby Boomer After the war, there was also a surplus of baby making. The common stereotype of two children, a boy and girl, was the ideal American family.

The Suburbs Many Americans moved to the suburbs, outside of the city where thousands of new homes, many with a garage, were being built.

Not always “Happy Days” – Urban poverty Not everything was good in the 1950’s. When many people, mostly white Americans, moved to the suburbs, city life began to crumble. About 20% of the population, many of which were African Americans, lived in poverty in the cities.
