Yay! The POD has arrived!
However, it’s looking very sad We need YOUR HELP!
So what can you do? We need to develop awareness across our school. How can we do this? We need to create posters!
Students can use the facts provided in the handout help make posters related to healthy eating and need to support our community. These posters can be educational or can be used to encourage students to donate cans to fill the POD.
• The goal is to fill the POD with as many canned goods and coats as possible. • Once full, the POD will be dropped off on November 25 th at the Capitol Area Food bank. • We will need 2 staff members and 20 students to help unload the POD during the Nov 25 th "Day of Service" between 10 am-12 pm. • We will select the students that stood out as a rising philanthropist. • Ms. Counts has already committed to combine forces and have NJHS students help out the other students will be nominated in 7 th grade. However, this is an entire school effort.
Advocacy Activity Ideas * Coat fashion show * Movie night on campus * Inter-school competition (grade vs. grade, class vs. class etc. ) * Sports day – admission is coat or can * Flash-mob at local grocery store with choreographed dance and posters * Coat- and can-thermometer * “How Many People Have We Fed” chart * “Can the Principal/Coach” - fill principal’s or coach’s office with cans/coats until s/he’s got no room! * Partner with local business and have them do a coat/can drive to in turn donate to the school * Challenge local businesses to match your can/coat donation
* Tie coats and cans into existing event – pep rally, family night, Mr. Cougar, etc. * “Moment of Hunger” – reflect during morning announcements about food insecurity * Each grade responsible for different food item (peanut butter, canned proteins, pasta, etc. ) * Create blogs to share with the entire school * TV commercials, signs outside the school, signs on the marque * Letters in teachers boxes with facts about food insecurity and details about how and what to donate * Movie day at Alamo Drafthouse where the students bring in cans and coats. With 3 cans their name is entered into a raffle for the chance to win a special lunch. If students bring a coat, they get a chance to walk the “red carpet” at the Drafthouse and take special VIP photos.
