Introduction • Hypertext Markup Language. – Hypertext : More than text, readable text – Markup : to structure it in a specific format • tells the Web browser how to display a Web page's words and images for the user. It determines the look and structure of a text like font type, size and color.
History of HTML 1991 1990 1989 1980 • he first publicly available description of HTML was a document called "HTML Tags by Berner Lee • Berners-Lee specified HTML and wrote the browser and server software in late 1990 • Berners-Lee wrote a memo proposing an Internetbased hypertext system. • physicist Tim Berners-Lee, a contractor at CERN, proposed and prototyped ENQUIRE, a system for CERN researchers to use and share documents.

HTML Elements • HTML documents consists of different html elements. • An Elements consists: • • Start Tag Attribute Element Body End Tag
Start and End Tag • Start Tags name written in <> • End Tags name written in </> • All Html file must be written with in <html> start and </html> end tag • Some other example of start and end tag : – <body>…</body> – <li>…</li> – <table>…</table> etc
Element Body • Written with in the start and end tag Element of b <html> tag Elem <body> ent of <b> JISCE, Kalyani</b> body tag </body> </html Element of html tag
Empty Element • Some HTML elements have no element body, meaning you cannot write any text between the start tag and end tag. • Empty HTML elements do not need an end tag. –
Element Attributes • An HTML element can have attributes • Attributes are embedded inside the start tag of the HTML element. Here is an example: • <table border="0">. . . </table> • Attributes are written name value pair <table border="0">. . . </table> Attribute name Attribute value
Nested Elements • Some HTML elements can have other HTML elements nested inside them. <html> <body> <b> JISCE, Kalyani</b> </body> </html> Body nested under html and b is nested under body tag.
Doctype • The doctype declaration must be at the top of the document. • The doctype is not an HTML element, even though it looks a bit like it. • The doctype tells the browser what version of HTML that is used in the document. – <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W 3 C//DTD HTML 4. 01//EN" "http: //www. w 3. org/TR/html 4/strict. dtd">
The html Element • The <html> element marks the beginning and the end of the HTML document. All HTML content has to be within the start and end tag (<html>. . . </html>).
The head and title Elements • The <head> element contains all the page information which is not shown in the browser. • For instance, the <title> element, metatags and more elements which will be covered in later texts in this tutorial. – <head><title>Page Title</title></head>
The body Element • The <body> element contains the visible page content. It can contain text, images, graphs, forms, tables etc.
