How do Boolean Operators work? QUALITY SAFETY QUALITY Example for using boolean operator "AND" Search query - QUALITY AND SAFETY Records containing both QUALITY and SAFETY will be returned. This narrows the search making the results more specific. Example for using boolean operator “NOT" : Search query - QUALITY NOT SAFETY Records only containing QUALITY will be returned. Searching Databases hints & tips l Be aware of US terminology and spelling – – l e. g. Emergency room or trauma room for A&E e. g. Pediatric for Paediatric Use “ ” to search for an exact phrase. - e. g. Searching for Health Promotion would return articles containing the words Health and Promotion but not necessarily together in the text. Searching for “Health Promotion” would search for the exact phrase. l Truncation: use * as to search for plurals or terms with different endings - e. g. Physio* for physiotherapy / physiotherapists, etc. (but would also find physiology, physiognomy. . . ) 11

General tips for database searching l l l 32 Type in Ctrl + F to quickly go through an article for a keyword Restrict to full text or else we can get full text article for you Put in limits at end, otherwise could exclude results Can select fields as well, good for authors Sometimes if you find a good article, check the keywords, SHs or even the ref list
