Beware of Greenwashing When the common ground is greenwashing, beware!
Greenwashing • “A superficial or insincere display of concern for the environment that is shown by an organization. (Dictionary. com)” • “Used to describe the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service. The Six Sins of Greenwashing • 1. Hidden trade-offs: A product that's eco -friendly in some ways, but not others, such as paper from sustainable forests that's bleached by methods that release dioxin. Hanson, T. (2009, August 8). Eco-friendly labelling? It's a lot of greenwash. ' Toronto Star. Retrieved August 19, 2009 from www. thestar. com
• 2. No proof: A claim that can't be substantiated by easily available information or reliable certification, such as toilet paper claiming a certain percentage of recycled content, but without evidence.
• 3. Vagueness: A claim so poorly defined its meaning will likely be misunderstood. "All natural" isn't always non-toxic, for instance.
• 4. Irrelevance: A claim that may be truthful but not helpful – CFC-free is a frequent claim, but CFCs are banned by law.
• 5. Fibbing: False claims, such as products claiming to be Energy Star-certified that are not.
• 6. Lesser of two evils: A claim true within a product's category, but not for the category overall, such as a "fuel-efficient SUV. "

Nature’s Defenders • “Here’s a confrontation that rarely hits the news headlines – yet it has profound ramifications for all of us. • On one side are the people who live in the wild places in the world, the forests, the highlands, the plains. They are indigenous people who, according to Western standards and norms, are the poorest and most isolated but who see themselves as the guardians of nature. • ON the other are people who occupy the wild places of capitalism, the boardrooms of major corporations and the governments that support them. Foremost amongst them are the big industries – energy, mining, banking which see themselves as the guardians of growth and consumerism. • The fight is over nothing less than the natural world we inhabit and our capacity to survive global warming. With each day this clash is becoming more pertinent and intense. ” Baird, V. (2011, Oct. ). Nature’s defenders. New Internationalist. 15.
Hydroelectric Dams in the Forest – Two Views • “two diametrically opposed approaches to the forest. Outsiders tend to see the forest as comparatively empty of people but full of resources to be extracted as quickly and effectively as possible. • Forest communities see it as a mother, a provider, who must be treated gently and with respect. ‘You must take from the forest only what you need when you need it, not as much as you can get, ’ is how one man puts it. ” (Baird, 2011)
Algae “This satellite image provided by NOAA shows the algae bloom on Lake Erie in 2011 which according to NOAA was the worst in decades. The algae growth is fed by phosphorus mainly from farm fertilizer runoff and sewage treatment plants, leaving behind toxins that have contributed to oxygen-deprived dead zones where fish can't survive. The toxins can kill animals and sicken humans. Ohio's fourth-largest city, Toledo, told residents late Saturday Aug. 2, 2014 not to drink from its water supply that was fouled by toxins possibly from algae on Lake Erie. ” CBC News.
