SCHULTZ’ MISSION PUTS EMPLOYEES IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS • Howard Schultz on the Starbucks mission statement: “You can not expect your employees to exceed the customers expectations if you do not exceed the employee’s expectation of management. That’s the contract. ” • Schultz original concept of Starbucks involved the idea the people were willing to pay for an experience, not just coffee as a commodity. To make this idea work he knew he had to treat his employees a specific way.
INTELLECTUAL STIMULATION • Transformational leaders encourage others to be problem solvers and teach them how to be innovative. Schultz also encourages all employees to share their thoughts and ideas without fear of ridicule.
HIRING THE RIGHT PEOPLE • Schultz builds on his belief that success relies on employees by his selection and grooming process for management. • In 2008 he held a four day conference for 10, 000 managers in New Orleans. His goal was to challenge and inspire the managers.
MISSION AND VISION • Transformational leaders see the big picture. Schultz has no shortage of mission and vision. In an interview with Oprah he said he likes coffee but that not why he started this. • Vision: His goal was to create a company that treated people with respect and dignity. • Mission: You can get a cup of coffee at Starbucks, but that is not why it exists. It is a place to meet friends, hold meetings, study, socialize, work and relax.
POWERFUL PARTNERSHIPS • Starbucks partnered with Barnes and Noble so that people could enjoy good reads with good coffee • They partnered with Itunes; people can download Starbucks playlists • They get into hard to get into locations like hotels, airports and theme parks.
