What is “annotation”? Annotations are notes we make in a text to help us understand what we are reading We annotate a text in order to draw attention to various elements, such as: Figurative language Symbolism Themes Repetition Characterization Foreshadowing Memorable Quotes

For example…. Figurative language: “Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. ”

Figurative language: “Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. ” Symbolism: “Although there was evening brightness showing through the windows of the bunkhouse, inside it was dark. ” Repetition: Lennie’s strength mentioned 4 times (pg. 39 -43) Characterization: “He can’t think of nothing to do, but he sure can take orders. ” Foreshadowing: “Trouble with mice is you always kill ’em”
