Maintaining balance Which is a balanced lead? • Residents say teenagers belonging to the youth club are responsible for the vandalism. But youngsters claim the problems are being caused by gangs from other estates in the city. Or • Teenagers from the youth club are responsible for vandalism on a housing estate.
Writing leads/intros • It’s an attention grabbing device. • Highlights either the most dramatic, important, interesting or unusual part of the story. • Intros tend to be contrived – they don’t begin at the beginning but, instead, pull out the most dramatic, exciting, important or unusual part of the story. • A well-constructed story will later explain, justify and expand on the intro.
