RESEARCH SOURCES Popular Periodicals • • • Can be found at news stands and grocery stores Articles are written for the general public with plain and simple language General reading level Purpose: Entertain the reader Broad variety of topics Authors may not have specific expertise Scholarly Publications • Available in libraries and on-line format • Written for a narrow audience: researchers, students, professionals; experts • Purpose: Delve into specific topics within a field • Written by experts and researchers within a discipline for academic or scholarly journal • Evident by the credentials that accompany the article: (name, degree, university or professional affiliation)

THE ABSTRACT v. A summary of the article v. Usually limited in word count (120 words)
INTRODUCTION v 3 -10 paragraphs v. Statement of thesis v. Purpose of the article v. Brief literature review that focuses on the lack of research on this topic • Identify the gap • Justify the need for more information
MAIN BODY v. Systematic detailing of what you said you were going to do in the Abstract and Introduction
THE CONCLUSION v. Revisit the introduction v. Reaffirm your position v. Suggest ideas for future research v. Raise new issues or questions you did not previously consider

SUBMITTING ARTICLES • Submit article as a word document to Dr. Bonnie Tiell at btiell@tiffin. edu • Include an abstract • The title page should not include the author(s) name • The e-mail should include the names of all authors • Dr. Tiell will make an electronic copy and distribute to reviewers – double-blind
THE PEER REVIEW PROCESS v A Peer Review is a quality control process used by journals to ensure that the articles they publish represent the best scholarship currently available written by and targeted towards experts in a specific field of research v. Who are the “peers” and what do they review? • Experts in the discipline or field • Review the appropriateness of the topic for a specific publication • Determine the reliability, credibility and contribution to the field
THE PEER REVIEW PROCESS v. Process begins when the article is submitted v. The editor(s) of the journal submit the article to selected experts in the field for review v. Authors and reviewers do not know each other’s names (integrity)
START WRITING. . . • Write in the third person (avoid “I”, “we”, etc. ) • Use active rather than passive voice • Example: She presented her research, ” not “Her research was presented. . . “ • Use correct and consistent tenses • Avoid jargon • Define acronyms – Use full name once, then initials throughout the rest of the paper, i. e. “Tiffin University (TU) is a small, private, not-for profit, etc. ”
WHERE TO BEGIN? v What interests you? v How much information do have and how much can you find out (literature review)? v What information can’t you find that you wish you could? v Can you identify some unresolved issues or problems associated with the topic? v Find a related article in a journal and use it as a model v Hands-on Activity: • (1) select a topic • (2) follow the above steps • (3) read it out loud • (4) critique
