HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE ESSAY 7 Steps to follow
Step 1: Pick a Topic • • Is your topic already assigned or are you free to choose your own. If topic is not assigned, focus on a topic you have previously studied. Are you writing to entertain, persuade, or inform? Research topic to get more information relating to subject.
Step 2: Prepare an outline or diagram of your ideas • • The key is organization! You may use an outline or diagram to jot down ideas. Also known as graphic organizers. Choose one that works best for you.

Step 3: Write your thesis statement A thesis statement tells the reader the point of your essay. Contains two parts. • • 1 st- Topic of the essay • 2 nd-Point of the essay EXAMPLE?
Step 4: Write the body • • • Your body will argue, explain, or describe your topic. Begin with your main idea as the introductory sentence. Follow with each supporting ideas from you outline/diagram. Give detailed examples to back up your position. Each body paragraph should have the same flow to it.
Step 5: Write the introduction Your introduction should attract the reader’s attention and show the focus of your essay. Use an attention grabber; • • • Shocking information, dialogue, story, quote, or a simple summary. Your introduction must tie in with your thesis statement. The thesis statement will be the last sentence of your introduction paragraph.
Step 6: Write the conclusion • • • Bring closure to the topic and sum up your overall ideas with final perspective. Include three to five powerful ending sentences. Review main points and reinforce your thesis statement.
Step 7: Add the finishing touches • • • Review and reread what you have written. Ensure your essay follows an order and is logical. Check for spelling and grammatical errors. Add phrases and build connections to increase fluidity of the essay. Review directions, application, and rubric for assignment details. Have someone review your essay for errors you may have missed.
