How to Waltz By: Gavin Clark
What’s first? Before you dance the Waltz, you need a partner! Boys, politely ask the girl if she would like to dance If she says yes, escort her to an open spot to dance in
Closed position After you have a partner, you need to know how to hold them The boy’s left hand takes the girl’s right and holds it at the girl’s eye level The boy’s right hand should go under the girl’s left arm His right hand should be at her shoulder blade The girl’s left hand should be on top of the guys arm The girl should be holding her own arm Make sure you’re pushing against each other!
The Basic step for Waltz The boy steps with his left foot forward The girl steps with her right foot backwards, because the girl is always right Then the boy steps to his right and brings his feet together The girl steps with her left and brings her feet together You then repeat this going the other way, so in reverse
Technique for the Waltz The Waltz is a heel lead dance Step like you are walking down the street with your heel out The Waltz has a rise and a fall This is attained by stepping with your heel on the first step Then going on your toes while stepping to the side and bringing your feet together
Counts/Timing The basic step takes three steps to complete So the Waltz is counted 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3
Music choice Something slow is preferred Fast works too, but it is more difficult As long as the time signature is an equivalent of three counts anything will work A song that is counted 1, 2, 3, 4 will work, as long as you hesitate for a count on your first step
