How to use this research briefing template What is a research briefing? Research briefings are two page, easy to read, clear, concise documents which highlight the key messages and findings arising from a piece of academic research. They are primarily used to relay research findings to a policy audience. Briefings should be as clear as possible and language should not contain jargon, acronyms or technical terms that would prohibit them from being used by a lay audience. Before you write your briefing – try to answer the following questions. They will help to focus your briefing and make it more relevant: • Who do you want to read your briefing? • What information do you want them to remember? What are your take-home messages? • What do you want to achieve with the briefing? • What does your audience have to do with the information to make this happen? • How can you frame your briefing best to make sure this happens? Guidance on using the template This template should be used to prepare briefings for research that has been funded by the NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR). Generally the template is flexible and should be amended to show your research in the best way possible. However, there are some areas that should not be edited or changed, these include • Information about the School; • Branding including colours and text/slogans/logos in relation to NIHR and the School; • Font size of text; and • The briefing should be a maximum of 2 pages long. If the content overruns, reducing the word count should be considered before other options are explored. Consider using clear diagrams and pictures to explain you ideas and findings. Pictures can enhance the document and make it easier to engage with. We are able to assist with images for your briefing – please contact us at SPHR. Comms@newcastle. ac. uk for support. Please be aware images obtained from the internet may require consent before being able to be used in the briefing document. Can a quote be used to help support your work? If so, please remember to get details so the quote can be attributed. Consider ways to make your information more concise and accessible. Can some of the information be presented as bullet points? Once completed and prior to circulation, feedback on the completed template should be sought from the SPHR Communications Manager and SPHR Knowledge Exchange Broker. Further They can information be contacted at SPHR. Comms@newcastle. ac. uk. Please submit with enough time for review before circulation is required.
