How to tell if a person is overweight? • The center for disease control and prevention (CDC) – Uses the body mass index (BMI) to define 2 terms. This formula uses the ratio of height to weight (weight in KG divided by height in meters squared) • At risk for overweight • Overweight
CDC definition for children and teenagers • A child or teen is “at risk for being overweight” if his or her body mass is over 85 th percentile and less then the 95 th percentile for their age • A child or teen is overweight if his or her body mass is more then the 95 th percentile for his or her age
Calorie Minimum Maximum • 1200 • Below 1200 is called anorexia • 2700 • Above 2700 is called overeating
For adults • Definitions of “at risk for overweight” and overweight and obese come from the amount of body fat and the location of body fat rather then weight scale • Many factors such as age, gender, and bone structure, must be considered when determining if an adult is at the correct weight
Activity • Read the handouts and information for weight loss facts • Read the scenario sheet for Charlie • Use the information from the handouts to come up with a plan to give to Charlie • You have 15 minutes to do this • When the time is up one person from your group will take part in a panel’s discussion on what the best solution to Charlie’s situation is
