The Assistive Technology Partnership (ATP), through collaboration, provides all Nebraskans access and opportunities to better live, learn, and work. Since 1989, The Assistive Technology Partnership (ATP) has assisted Nebraskans with disabilities, their families, educators, service coordinators, employers and a host of agencies to learn about and use assistive technology. ATP is a state agency in the Department of Education. Nebraska VR applied for a start up grant and ATP was funded by the Technology-Related Assistance Act of 1988. The original name of the program was the Assistive Technology Project. The name was changed in 1998. The new name is symbolic of the tremendous changes that occurred in Nebraska’s technology delivery system during ATP’s early years. Creating a partnership with Nebraska Health and Human Services and Nebraska VR was just the beginning of a unique collaboration. Initially called Solutions on Site, Technology Specialists conducted on-site assessments at homes and worksites for their new partners, which resulted in consumer success using appropriate and cost-effective solutions. Creating a partnership with agencies resulted in a unique collaboration. The seamless service across program lines resulted in less duplication and made it possible for individuals of all ages and disabilities to access success through a single point of entry. ATP provides services to explore potential funding sources, try equipment before buying, and have an assessment/consultation done by a qualified technology specialist at home, school, and work. Today, ATP’s focus has not changed. It continues to help individuals locate and use assistive technology appropriate for their purpose. What has changed is ATP’s capacity to serve Nebraska. The program started with one office and a staff of five. Today six offices and a staff of 26 work to connect Nebraskans across the State to assistive technology. The future is bright. ATP continues to add new partners and explore innovative ways to get devices into the hands of consumers.

Funding • Funding for the cost of assistive technology or services needed by consumers

Funding • Funding for the cost of assistive technology or services needed by consumers who experience a disability are not directly funded by ATP. Funding may be available from numerous programs. Examples include disability-related organizations, government programs, and nonprofits, etc. • Each resource has their own eligibility requirements. Requirements may include age, residence, disability, income, request, etc. Funding amounts also vary, and it may require several resources to fund what is needed.

Software can do a lot to make computers more accessible for disabled users. However,

Software can do a lot to make computers more accessible for disabled users. However, some accessibility features require extra hardware, or assistive technology. Most assistivetechnology devices are similar to keyboards and speakers—they are peripherals that can be plugged into the main computer. Here are some common types of assistive technology you may encounter. Screen magnifiers: Screen magnifiers can be placed over your computer's monitor to ensure the content on the screen always appears magnified. Today, most people use the magnifier or zoom features on their operating systems to view content, but external magnifiers are still available as well. Alternative keyboards: For people who have difficulty using standard keyboards, there a range of alternative options. For example, users can purchase keyboards with larger keys that are easier to see or press. They can also buy keyboards with alternative key arrangements, including arrangements for people who can only type with one hand or with a limited number of fingers. Switch-adapted peripherals: Switch devices allow people with limited mobility to control technology with very small motions, such as a puff of breath or a head movement. Switch-adapted mice and keyboards make it possible for disabled users to interact with computers even if they are unable to operate peripherals with their hands.

• As the Re. Use Network has grown, it is the partnerships among local and state organizations, providers, and volunteers that make equipment reuse possible. • What is the future impact of reuse and why is it important? Re. Use Network • Increases the independence of consumer: Being able to access equipment (not covered by insurance, ineligible for funding, or no available funding) makes it possible for Nebraskans to be independent at home, school, and work. • Protects our environment: Every year over 2 MILLION TONS of medical waste is produced in the United States. This waste fills up our landfills and pollutes our ground water and air. • In 2017, the Re. Use Network prevented 7, 891 pounds of equipment from going to Nebraska landfills. • A network member says, “This group is definitely making a difference for equipment reuse in Nebraska!”
