HOW TO HAVE AN OPINION BASED ON FACTS
HOW TO HAVE AN OPINION BASED ON FACTS By Jessie Rogers
WHAT IS MEDIA BIAS? Media bias is the tendency of the media to favor one side of the political spectrum over the other side. This causes their reports to be less credible, and their news company to be less trusted by the people.
HOW TO AVOID MEDIA BIAS Cross-examine news sources Find television stations and newspapers that give facts instead of opinions Do not believe everything you hear Formulate an opinion based on your beliefs and values, not those of a news anchor
BIASED NEWS SOURCES Fox News CNN Buzzfeed News Rush Limbaugh Sean Hannity Glenn Beck The New Yorker
FACT-BASED NEWS NPR NPR gives just the facts, and they update their news every hour. Their news podcast lasts about five minutes, so they only have time to give the facts, and nothing but the facts. Wikinews Similar to wikipedia, wikinews is a good place to start. They give strictly facts and quotes, and do not seem to lean one way or the other.
REMEMBER… Everyone is able to decide which news source they trust. It is up to the viewer to decide if the news source in question is strictly fact-based. People tend to prefer the news source that says what they already believe, but getting just the facts will allow the viewer to develop their own opinion without the help of a biased news company.
