Main Safety Tips • Never put your face into an unknown animals face, or too close to its personal space. • Do not sneak up behind, or crowd an animal. • Always be prepared to move away or protect yourself when handling animals. • Always be cautious when handling animals you don’t know, no matter how friendly they seem.
• Watch for warning signs of agitation, aggression, and fear such as bared teeth, growling, stiff body movement, excessive starring, tucked ears and tails. • Know if you are allergic to certain animals before handling them, as this can also cause you harm. • When working with large animals in closed or cramped areas, have an exit strategy. • Remember just because an animal is cute does not mean it will not attack you and cause you harm.
Restriction • Always use a leash when leading a dog. • Use a muzzle when working on a dog or cat, if the procedure will agitate them • To pick up a dog or cat: 1. place your arm under their head 2. place your other arm under the chest with your palm flat on the chest facing forward toward the front of the animal 3. Lift the animal straight up and carry where needed. (do not excessively carry the animal)
Restraint • Dogs: Standing- place your arm around the head of the dog, place your other arm around the top of the body and hold the front leg, hold firmly but not hard. Sitting- two people lay the dog on its side. One holds the fronts paws criss crossed holding the bottom paw with your wrist over the top, simultaneously restraining the head with you fore arm, the other person does the same thing to the back legs and restrains the body with their own.
Restraint • Cats: standing-hold the cat with the butt facing your chest, place one hand under the head and pull slightly upward, the other hand should hold the front feet stretched out, use your body to restrain the cat’s body. Sitting-the cat can be held the same way as the dog only one person can use two hands instead of two people.
