Dropped Quotes EVIL! SO BAD! THE WORST! Never put a quote in your paragraph without introducing and citing it. Example: BAD: “The hell with what I says. ” GOOD: George said, “The hell with what I says” (Steinbeck 5).

The Cream The actual quote Must be WORD-FOR-WORD! What if there already quotes around it? ? ? Example: Lennie closed his hand away from George’s direction. “It’s on’y a mouse, George. ” Two options: Steinbeck wrote, “Lennie closed his hand away from George’s direction. ‘It’s on’y a mouse, George’” (5). Hiding the mouse from George, Lennie said, “It’s on’y a mouse, George” (Steinbeck 5).
