What is Division? Division is a basic math function that separates a large number into smaller parts.
When do we use division? We can use division when we need to separate things into equal groups. Example: If you are giving out 9 apples to 3 of your friends.
Learning Division A division problem will look like this: 9÷ 3=? 10÷ 5=? How do we solve these problems? By grouping
What is grouping? Grouping is when we take a large number and move it into smaller groups. For example if you had 9 apples on a table and wanted to give each of your friends an equal number of apples you would give each friend one apple until there were no more apples to pass out.
Grouping example Lets pretend that these red circles are apples and that the brown ovals are baskets. We want to put an equal amount of apples in each basket.
Grouping example Now that we have put all the apples in a basket lets count them all up and make sure that each basket has the same amount of apples. They all have 3! Three apples in each basket! Good Job! Now everyone has an equal amount of apples.
Conclusion So when we see a division equation, what do we do? Put the apples in the basket! Remember that your apples are the big number and the baskets are the small number, and you can divide anything!
