‘How to Develop a Theme’ 10 th Grade by Madison Schulz Theme?
What is a Theme? By definition, a theme is, “the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person's thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic”. Theme’s can be very opinionated and almost always different. Sometimes, even a writer does not have one set theme for his/her writings.
What is Critical Thinking? When determining a theme, you have to use a technic called critical thinking. Critical thinking is when you step out of your comfort zone and think about things from someone else’s perspective. Critical thinking is imperative for readers to use while reading because it shows them different opinions, objectives, and perspectives that they, otherwise, would not have seen if they did not put themselves in that position. Before you move on, try this exercise. Your Turn! Think about a time when you were angry at someone for doing something mean to you. Instead of getting angry, try to come up with at least two reasons why this person may have done what they did.
How Do I Develop A Theme? When determining a theme, keep three questions in mind. The first question is: what happened? What happened in the book? How did the book start? How did it end? What happened in the middle? These questions will help you better understand what the author did during the book. The second question to ask is: What is the subject? This may sound scary, but it really is easy to pick out. The best way to find out the subject is to ask yourself: If I were to describe this book to a friend, what would I say? This will usually help you analyze the subject of a book. The final question to ask is: How is the protagonist in the book and how does he/she change throughout the book? The best way to do this is to write out serval characteristics of the character from the beginning of the book. Then, go to the end and find serval characteristics that describe the character then. This will help you analyze the change that occurred throughout the book. Look over all of the answers to these questions, when you have completed them, and then determine theme that best describes all of the answers.
