How to deal with a lot of sources of information • This can seem daunting and potentially confusing. Where do you start? Try this method: • Choose one core textbook to be the trunk of your knowledge tree. This should be a recommended text that gives an overview of your course. Discuss your choice with your tutor. • Study this text thoroughly and before you use other sources. Check you are familiar with all the main concepts and all vocabulary and definitions in this book. Revise this text periodically. • This book will become a safe and solid reference point to return to after you have read other sources of information. It will help you to understand new arguments and theories by relating them to something you already know very well. • These other sources are like the branches and leaves on your knowledge tree. You can grow your tree by reading, researching, and asking questions. Some of your learning you will consider to be main topics or branches that attach firmly to the trunk and other bits will be more detailed and specific – the thinner branches and leaves.
